For centuries, people have looked to their and others’ Zodiac signs believing that their personalities and destinies are determined by the position of the stars at their birth. As such, many fans would be interested to know exactly which Yu-Gi-Oh! character matches their own sign the most. With many varying personalities throughout the cast, there are plenty to choose from.
There are twelve Zodiac signs, each represented by a constellation, hence the term “star sign” (sun and moon signs are applicable as well, but most discussion of astrology revolves around star signs.) From the open-hearted Gemini Yugi to the stubborn Capricorn Marik, all of Yu-Gi-Oh!’s characters can represent the Zodiac in some way.
10 Yugi Muto - Gemini
May 21 - June 20
The constellation Gemini depicts the twins Castor and Pollux of Greek myth. While Castor was mortal, Pollux was a demigod who lent immortality to his brother: not unlike Yami Yugi lending Yugi his own supernatural power!
Hosting the spirit of a three-thousand-year-old Pharaoh in his body is far from the only way that Yugi Muto embodies the typical traits of the Twins. Gemini signs are cheerful, optimistic, and highly adaptable, and are very good at making friends with many different people. Throughout the series, Yugi is always willing to believe in the best of people and give them second chances, which has resulted in some of his strongest friendships.
His solving of the Millennium Puzzle and mastery of Duel Monsters stem from his natural Gemini curiosity and fascination with what interests him most in the world: games and puzzles. Despite his love of a good game, he isn’t always carefree and playful. He’s intensely loyal to his loved ones and can never be swayed from his belief in what is right, which is something he comes to share with his alter ego.
9 Joey Wheeler - Aquarius
January 20 - February 18
Aquarius is one of the three Air signs (the others being Gemini and Libra), who, as Joey demonstrates, are traditionally restless and determined to make their mark in whatever field their passion lies.
Though he can often be reckless and impulsive, Joey is clever, funny, and always willing to give it his all when he recognizes a part of himself he needs to improve. He devotes himself fully to his and his friends’ goals, and will never stop until he’s succeeded. For bonus points, his being Yugi’s best friend makes perfect sense; Geminis are highly compatible with Aquarians like Joey.
He starts off with a deck that’s something of a mess, but steadily builds a deck whose strongest cards express his style and personality best. Aquarians’ fiercely independent streak brings them more than just creativity: they tend to be rebellious and even aggressive at times. Joey’s temper and willingness to throw a punch is mostly played for laughs in the anime, but in the manga he’s explicitly a stronger fighter.
8 Tea Gardner - Leo
July 23 - August 22
Tea may not be the most prolific duelist in the show, but true to Leo form, she's no pushover: she wins every duel she takes part in!
Headstrong and determined, Tea doesn’t stand for underhandedness or cruelty, and can’t easily be made to change her mind once she’s decided to take a stand about something. Leos like her don’t care how great the odds are against them: they are steadfast in their courage and aren’t afraid of anything, even if logically they probably should be, leading to Tea's most badass moments in the show.
Leos are drawn to the arts and entertainment, which tracks with Tea’s dream of becoming a professional dancer, which she’s even willing to break school rules to pursue. They are also passionate and protective friends, which fits both the Lion sign and Tea, who is the show’s most ardent believer in the power of friendship. If anyone threatens, hurts, or even insults her friends, she’s the first to come roaring in to defend them.
7 Tristan Taylor - Aries
March 21 - April 19
Like his closest friend Joey and the Ram for which his sign is named, Tristan is loyal, energetic, and brave in the face of danger. He’s honest to the point of bluntness, always saying exactly what he thinks. Aries tends to like a wide range of friends, which the group he usually hangs out with definitely satisfies, as becomes a staple in the best anime like Yu-Gi-Oh!
Tristan tends to be relegated to the background most of the time — consequences of not really being a duelist in a show called Duel Monsters — but does have his moments of heroism. He comes in particularly handy against Yami Bakura, from protecting Mokuba’s soulless body to hucking the Millennium Ring across Duelist Kingdom to even punching Thief King Bakura in the face.
6 Ryo Bakura - Virgo
August 23 - September 22
Ryo Bakura is as much a classic Virgo sign — smart, shy, and always putting others before himself — as his vicious alter ego is the exact opposite. He is quiet and keeps to himself, and though he would love nothing more than to play games with his peers, he holds back for fear of Yami Bakura harming them. Even so, he’s unfailingly polite to just about everyone.
Unfortunately for Ryo, Yami Bakura gets much more screen time than he does by way of constant bodyjacking. But Ryo still does as much as he can to help his friends out when he’s in control, up to and including risking his own life to protect them from opponents much stronger than he is. He even summons up the strength to resist Yami Bakura’s possession as much as he can.
5 Seto Kaiba - Scorpio
October 23 - November 21
Honing his Scorpio traits is what enabled Seto to claw his way up the ladder of success since he was a child. The Scorpions tend to get a bad rap among those who take the Zodiac seriously, but their intense determination to reach their goals and refusal to give up no matter the obstacles in their way makes them high achievers. He isn’t a team player, and often stubbornly insists that the power and wealth he’s amassed means he doesn’t have to be.
The lack of security and safety in Seto’s childhood exacerbated the suspicion and cold practicality that Scorpios are known for. He is a technical and entrepreneurial genius, and spends his billions on new innovations and personal projects just as quickly as he makes them. He isn’t heartless, as his brother will confirm, but holds people at a distance and is the most unwilling of the entire cast to believe in the existence of the supernatural, even when it’s right in front of his face.
4 Mokuba Kaiba - Cancer
June 21 - July 22
The Crab sign is a faithful friend and relative, which is clear to anyone who has seen the lengths Mokuba goes for his older brother Seto. He doesn’t appear to have any friends his own age, focusing all his efforts on the family business. Though Cancer signs usually avoid conflict, Mokuba usually tries to fight when necessary, even if it rarely works out well for him.
Cancer signs do not handle instability or lack of support well. Especially in the manga where he’s not only a perpetual cheater but much more overtly violent, Mokuba copes with his difficult childhood by emulating his brother in hopes of gaining his approval. Once he befriends Yugi and company, he not only softens up, but is willing to bend KaibaCorp rules to help them out.
3 Maximilian Pegasus - Libra
September 23 - October 22
While Pegasus' Millennium Item is the Eye, the sign Libra is traditionally represented by the Scales.
Only a Libra’s vast imagination could be responsible for turning an ancient supernatural ritual into a children’s card game that takes the world by storm. Flashy and confident, Pegasus adores drama and seems to crave constant stimulation, if his cartoon obsession is any indication. Unfortunately for the heroes, his characteristic intelligence also translates into trickery and manipulation, making him a match for the best duelists in Yu-Gi-Oh!
Libras are great romantics who, when they fall in love, fall hard and deep, just as Pegasus does for his lost love Cynthia. Lonely and heartbroken at her death, he’s willing to go to tremendous and decidedly villainous lengths just for the chance to see her again. However, he also knows when enough is enough, and when Yugi beats him, he proves a graceful loser.
2 Marik Ishtar - Capricorn
December 22 - January 19
Usually, Capricorns are sticklers for rules and tradition, and are very concerned with having strictly defined rules to work within, or against as the case may be. Perhaps if Marik had had a more positive childhood, rather than one that bred fierce resentment against his family’s purpose, he might have been a more typical Capricorn. He still shows many of the sign’s notable traits: knowing exactly what he wants and pushing relentlessly for it.
The Goat sign, as one might guess, is intensely stubborn and convinced of their own righteousness. He is a grueling boss to work under as a Rare Hunter, as even his siblings find out, and will never forgive a wrong committed against him. It takes spending much of the Battle City arc getting kicked around
by Yami Marik for him to admit he may have been misguided in his quest to kill the Pharaoh and assume his power.
1 Duke Devlin - Pisces
February 19 - March 20
Because Duke’s personality and motivations differ so greatly between his manga and anime incarnations, it can be difficult to discern concrete traits of his sign. However, Pisces signs are highly artistic, not terribly quick to open up emotionally to others, and have a powerful sense of justice. Duke displays all of these in his quest for vengeance against Yugi, believing him to be either a cheater or to have wronged his own family, and in his showy anime personality and stoic manga personality alike.
Like other Water signs, the Fish are flexible and willing to let things be water under the bridge, as it were. It only takes being beaten once by Yugi in Dungeon Dice Monsters for Duke to mellow out and become friends with the group. Much as he demurs about having other reasons to hang around with them, it’s clear that he likes them and appreciates their forgiveness for the way he treated them.
