Winter Frost - Winter Wonderland Setting (21)

Winter Wonderland is one of the setting options in the 2020 Countdown to Christmas - Winter Frost. For more info about this quilt-along, check out the Frequently Asked Questions and join our Moda Bake Shop Bakers group. Find all the blocks {here}.

Chef's Notes:

This setting pattern offers some extra filler blocks! See the Printer Friendly file for instructions.

YIELD

63½” x 64½” quilt

INGREDIENTS

(12) 12½” unfinished blocks
(16) 6½” unfinished blocks
1¼ yards sashing/inner border
1 yard outer border
5/8 yard binding
4¼” yards backing

CUTTING

From Sashing Fabric, cut (11) 2” strips by WOF. Cut into:
(8) 2” x 6 ½” rectangles [A]
(12) 2” x 12 ½” strips [B]
(16) 2” x 14” strips [C]
(6) 2” Strips joined together to form inner border.
Optional: (2) 2” Strips for a horizontal sashing strip.

From Sashing Fabric, cut:
(7) 3 ½” Strips.

INSTRUCTIONS

STEP 1. MAKE BLOCK 4-PATCHES

Using (2) 2”x 6 ½” rectangles [A] and one 2” x 14” rectangle [C] make a four patch block as shown. Make (4) Blocks measuring 14” unfinished.

STEP 2. LAY OUT ROWS

Lay out your blocks into 4 rows of 4 blocks each to get a rough idea of where you would like your blocks to go. Once you have decided on a layout, attach ONE 2” x 12 ½” rectangle to a left or right side of each block, and ONE 2” x 14” rectangle to the top or bottom varying the placement of strips. Block now measures 14” unfinished.

Arrange Blocks for a final time on a design wall or floor. If you need to, add any 2” x 54.5” horizontal sashing strips to break up blocks. I added one between my 3rd and 4th rows.

Sew blocks together into 4 rows each of four blocks, adding in any full sashing rows you might need to achieve a scattered look.

STEP 3. ADD BORDERS

Measure quilt. Cut and add left/right inner border (approximately 2” x 56”) and then top/bottom border (approximately 2” x 57 ½”). Your border measurements will depend on how many horizontal sashing strips you have added. Measure quilt. Cut and add left/right outer border (approximately 3.5” x 59”) and top/bottom border (approximately 3.5” x 63 ½”). Your border measurements will depend on how many horizontal sashing strips you have added.

Quilt as desired and bind using (7) 2 ½” by WOF strips.

Pls explain why the very first block we received is 18” square (which is my very favorite blocks!!) & NONE of the suggested quilt layouts incorporate 18” blocks. I’m very disappointed. Since multiple blocks were offered with 18” options, I have 2 made & no idea how to design the quilt!

Hi Juddaca - I'm sorry but I have no idea. The only thing I know is that it's possible another setting option is coming.
